Sagyejeol Sikdang in Daegu: Beef Soup and Dakgaejang at the Dalseong Park Dawn Market

Sagyejeol Sikdang in Daegu is a soup restaurant in Dalseong-dong, Jung-gu, near Dalseonggongwon Station, an eight-minute walk from Exit 3. Its sign advertises chueotang (추어탕) and dakgaejang, and its tables line the street beside the Dalseong Park dawn market. I ordered the beef soup, the dakgaejang, and a Napa cabbage pancake (배추전), and both soups came packed with radish, bean sprouts, bracken, and meat. My verdict: a generous, no-fuss breakfast after walking the market, best eaten outdoors in the shade of the trees.

When the Dalseong Park dawn market is busiest

The Dalseong Park dawn market was packed when I arrived on a summer morning, with plenty of stalls to look at and people streaming nonstop even along the road where cars pass. Every so often a farmyard smell from the animals drifted through the market, which somehow suited the old-fashioned feel of the place.

Go on a Sunday In my experience, the Dalseong Park dawn market is nearly empty on Saturdays and at its busiest on Sundays, so a Sunday morning gives you the full scene.

My beef soup ended up buried under a mound of chopped chili and chopped garlic plus a few shakes of black pepper, so by then it was more chili-and-garlic soup than beef soup. Stirring the pile into the red broth mixed the seasoning all the way through before I ate.
